THE CONCEPT
Meditation can very well be defined as the science of
supplying the mind with favourable environment necessary for the manifestation
of its highest potential-which is perfection.
Everything, every living being in this world is the
manifestation of energy. Each thought of
mind or each action of body consumes energy. Secret of success lies in the
preservation and manipulation of energy.
Meditation has a wonderful power of resistance and it can
give the mind its much needed recess of rest and relaxation, has the ability to
draw out the best in one’s self so that one attains perfection.
Meditation is the seventh step of the EIGHT STEP YOGA (ASTANGA YOGA, RISHI PATANJALI). #
Meditation is not concentration, but concentration leads to
meditation. As it is a spontaneous flow of consciousness, the same cannot be
taught or exercised. Hence, when we talk about meditation, it is actual meant to
understand ‘preparation for meditation’
THE INDIAN ART OF MIND TRAINING
Indians do not differentiate between ‘material life’ and
‘spiritual life’, pay much value and importance to ‘values’, aspires the
highest but are satisfied with whatever received, do not lose faith and
confidence in spite of turmoil or distress, hence are awarded with the highest
gift of ‘Nature’ i.e. inner strength of mind, tolerance, love, divine unity and
will to serve all.
In India,
mind training or spiritual practice break all external form, and flow
spontaneously. Here children are taught not only to concentrate, but they know
how to be calm, confident and comfortable while in turmoil. They are not only
advised to put all efforts to join the battle of life and win, but to accept ‘defeat’
gracefully. They learn naturally to be one with nature, to develop inner
silence. They know that they are free and pay much importance to conscience(
VIVEK) and action (KARMA) and accept the same as guiding force to shape the
destiny of life.
An Indian loves and respect mother who also gives much time,
nurses, tells gospels from RAMAYANA and MAHABHARATA ,the great twin epics of India.
All these work deep into the mind of the young people and are manifested as
respect and love for the ‘self’, the family, the country and for the mankind as
a whole.
On maturity, his mind is trained up for renunciation of
desires slowly through life experiences and as a process, ‘ego’ is transcended.
These ‘desire and ego’ are the greatest source of sufferings, delusion and
bondage.
For spiritual development, understanding of ‘self’ as
individual consciousness and at the same time as part of the ‘Supreme Self’,
aspiration of the highest and finest quality, sense of satisfaction, deep peace
within and out of gratitude, feeling of love and will to serve all in return of
love and protection, he receives from the ‘Mother Nature’, all work naturally
to develop and harmonize the personality of an Indian.
All above train an Indian Mind in a very natural and
informal way.
His mental set up is developed in such a finer way through
mother’s influence and love in childhood that when grown up, his life and total
existence is transformed. He is very respectful to his mother, considers his
daughter or daughter-in-law, other young girls as mother, the country and the
whole world as mother.
